Swhirly – a crochet BOHO dress pattern with split
The Scheepjes Whirl is a fantastic yarn that’s suitable for a lot of different things. Many shawls have been made using this yarn, but I was looking for a tunic or a dress. Something airy and summery, something to throw on over a bikini or a top and legging.
Materials:
1 ball of Scheepjes Whirl (pattern shown in Cotton Candy Man, 760)
crochet hooks 3,5mm, 4mm, 4,5mm
The pattern is written in one size, but it’s very easy to adapt the pattern, either use more stitches for the body instead of the sleeves, or make a longer chain to start with.
Using 3,5mm hook ch 181 and close with a sl st, taking care not to twist.
5 rows as follows:
ch4 (counts as 1dc and ch1), *sk st, dc, ch1* repeat until end, close row with sl st in the 3d ch.
5 rows as follows:
ch4 (counts as 1dc and ch1), dc in same st, *sk 1st, dc, ch1, dc in same sp* repeat until end, close row with sl st in 3d ch.
3 rows as follows: sl st until you’re in the ch sp between the dc:
ch4 (counts as 1dc and ch1), dc in same sp, *dc, ch1, dc in same sp, ch2* repeat until end, close row with sl st in 3d ch.
1 row as follows: sl st until you’re in the ch sp between the dc:
ch5 (counts as 1dc and ch2), dc in same st, *dc, ch2, dc in same sp, ch2* repeat until end, close row with sl sp in 3d ch.
continue using 4mm hook.
3 rows as follows: sl st until you’re in the ch sp between the dcs:
ch3 (counts as 1dc), dc in same sp, ch2, 2dc in same sp, ch3, *2dc in open sp, ch2, 2dc in same sp, ch3* repeat until end, close row with sl st in 3d ch.
1 row as follows:sl st until you’re in the ch sp between the dcs:
ch3 (counts as dc), dc in same sp, ch2, 2dc in same sp, *2dc in open sp, ch2, 2dc in same sp, ch3* repeat until end, close row with sl st in 3d ch.
1 row as follows: sl st until you’re in the ch sp between the dcs:
ch3 (counts as 1dc), 2dc in same sp, ch3, 3dc in same sp, *3dc in open sp, ch3, 3dc in same sp, ch3*, continue until end, close row with sl st in 3d ch.
separate sleeves
place work flat, pin the center 13 clusters (3dc, ch3, 3dc) together (front and back together so you’ll only work with the middle 26 clusters, the open space will be the opening for the sleeves). Here you can adjust your fit, the body has a slight A line so it becomes slightly wider in the bottom, but if you prefer a loose fit, feel free to add some clusters to the body here.
15 rows as follows: sl st until you’re in the ch sp between the dcs:
ch3 (counts as 1dc), 2dc in same sp, ch3, 3dc in same sp, *3dc in open sp, ch3, 3dc in same sp, ch3* repeat until end, close row using sl st in 3d ch.
continue using 4,5mm hook
ch3 (counts as 1dc), 2dc in same sp, ch3, 3dc in same sp, *3dc in open sp, ch3, 3dc in same sp, ch3* repeat until end, close row using sl st in 3d ch.
You can now either continue like this or add a split. If you wish to add a split cut yarn and reattach in the center of the cluster space.
ch3 (counts as 1dc), 2dc in same sp, ch4, 3dc in same sp, *3dc in open sp, ch4, 3dc in same sp, ch4* repeat until end, close row using sl st in 3d ch.
to give the dress a playful character you can add a ch every 4 rows. The dress shown has 6ch in between the clusters at the end.
weave in the ends, give it a nice soak and enjoy!
